Cyber Security Basics Every Small Business Gets Wrong

Most breaches we investigate do not involve exotic attacks. They involve a shared password, an unpatched plugin and nobody watching the logs.
The attacks that actually happen
Small teams imagine targeted hackers. Reality is automated scanning: a bot finds an outdated component, drops a shell, and sells access on. Nobody chose you — you were simply reachable.
That is oddly good news, because commodity attacks are stopped by commodity discipline.
Four controls worth more than any product
Enforce multi-factor authentication on email, hosting and finance tools. Patch within days, not quarters. Give every person the least access their job needs. Keep offline backups you have actually restored from at least once.
Those four habits close the door on the overwhelming majority of incidents we are called in to clean up.
Know what you would do at 2am
An incident response plan does not need to be long. Who is called, who can take systems offline, who talks to customers, and where the credentials live. Writing that on one page turns a crisis into a procedure.
